Summerland Associates, LLC is committed to helping those in need create a better, brighter tomorrow for themselves. Our current activities include:
Oregon Food Bank
The Oregon Food Bank’s mission is to eliminate hunger and its root causes … because no one should be hungry.
Oregon Food Bank takes a holistic approach to ending hunger by bringing our community together to provide food, education and hope to our neighbors in need.
The Oregon Food Bank provides emergency food to people who are hungry through a cooperative statewide network of hunger-relief agencies, helping 1 in 5 households fend off hunger. OFB also leads statewide efforts to increase resources for hungry families and to eliminate the root causes of hunger by advocating for fair public policies, strengthening community food systems and providing nutrition and garden education to help people become more self-sufficient and resourceful.
At Summerland Associates we donate 10% of our subscription income to the Oregon Food Bank to help those less fortunate find hope.
Hadzabe Preservation Foundation
The Hadzabe are a unique hunter-gatherer group of people who mainly still depend, as they have for thousands of years, on collecting wild fruits, wild meat and honey, as their main and traditional foods.
Their DNA and key genetic markers have been tested and compared to other ancient people world-wide and it has been proven, in independent international testing, that the Hadzabe are among some of the oldest people and tribes in the world. The Hadzabe are therefor an ancient and unique people still living an ancient and unique way of life.
In 1976’s work was done by Mary Leakey at the Laetoli Pliocene site which documents in the volcanic tuff several sets of foot prints dated to 3.6 million years old. Both the Getty Conservation Institute and the Government of Tanzania worked to preserve this important site.
Now in the shadow of this historic site and within 50 miles lives a people that may trace their hominid roots back to these earliest people. Yet they and their way of life are endangered. Unless something is done these unique people may become extinct. Millions of dollars are spent on an annual basis to preserve the animals that draw tourists and their dollars from around the world. Huge preserves such as the Ngorongoro Crater are set aside and guards patrol them to provide protection for these animals to enjoy their way of life and yet nothing or very little is being done to protect an ancient and endangered people the Hadzabe.
The Hadzabe Preservation Foundation’s goal is to help the Hadzabe establish and maintain legal rights to the land they’ve lived on for thousdands of years with the goal of helping them preserve their ancient and simple way of life.
At Summerland Associates we are committed to helping this indigenous people in their struggle to maintain their independence. To that end, we donate 5% of our subscription income to this organization.
